Choroi 9-String Diatonic Kantele

An Enchanting Plucked Instrument Rooted in Nordic Tradition

The Choroi 9-String Diatonic Kantele is a gently resonant plucked instrument inspired by the ancient Finnish kantele, whose sound is woven through the national epic Kalevala. In myth, the first kantele—played by Väinämöinen—stilled both people and animals alike. That same quiet enchantment lives on in this beautifully crafted modern instrument.

Made from solid ash wood, the Choroi kantele echoes traditional Finnish forms through its open design and internal lemniscate, while offering clarity, warmth, and balance suited to contemporary musical use.

Simple, Versatile Playing

This kantele features 9 steel strings tuned diatonically, offering a clear and accessible scale for melody and song accompaniment. The instrument may be played traditionally resting on the knees, or comfortably held in the hands, making it versatile for seated play, storytelling, or gentle ensemble music.

Its diatonic tuning supports folk melodies, simple songs, and improvisation, while remaining approachable for players new to stringed instruments.
