Felter’s Prefelt is a soft, thin, and uniform 100% wool foundation for needle felting and wool painting. Made in the USA, it provides an easy-to-work surface for building landscapes, pictures, and other fiber artwork.

Prefelt, short for preliminary felt, is wool that has been lightly felted but not fully finished. Because the fibers remain relatively open, a felting needle moves through the surface easily—requiring less effort than working into dense craft felt. It makes an especially nice backing for wool paintings, allowing additional wool fibers to attach securely while still keeping the finished piece lightweight.

The natural cream wool can also be dyed, making it useful for creating custom backgrounds and foundations in your own choice of colors. The landscape shown in the photos was created using this prefelt as the base.
