The Other Eighteen Hours

Your child's school has taken the phone for six hours a day. Almost everything written about this is about those six hours.

UNESCO's Global Education Monitoring Report has been tracking the policy, and it has moved extraordinarily fast: from about 24% of countries with a national school phone ban in June 2023, to 40% in early 2025, to 114 education systems — 58% of countries — by March 2026. Thirty-nine US states now have a statewide ban or require districts to set one.

UNESCO's own position is that "bans alone will not solve the digital challenge". Which points directly at the evening, where the sleep is, where the group chats are, and where you are on your own.
